Keep root access on your Android phone even after an OTA update
Since I recently received an update from VZW on my Droid 2 and took the proper precautions I was able to keep root. I figured there are other people facing the same situation so I thought I would explain.
I noticed the update trying to install on my phone so I postponed it. I used "App Quartantine" to freeze the "Updater" and "Upgrader" apps on my Motorola device to stop the update from automatically downloading while I figured out what my options were. I verified that freezing the apps worked by trying to check for updates and noticed nothing happened.
After reading on some forums I found that there was an app called OTA RootKeeper by Voodoo. I installed this app, updated the "SuperUser" app's binaries to the latest version (look under preferences in the SU app). Then I used the RootKeeper app to protect the newly updated SU app. I thawed the "Updater" and "Upgrader" apps and then let the OTA update loose on my phone. After the reboot I went into the RootKeeper app and restored root access.
There was no need to temporarily un-root during the update since the update will work even when rooted. As expected the update broke root and I just hit the restore button in the RootKeeper app.
If you have a rooted Motorola, it might be advisable to freeze the "Updater" and "Upgrader" apps until you notice on the interwebs that there is an update available. That way you have time to make sure all of your ducks are in a row before the update happens automatically.
Edit (more info for Droid 2, Droid X and Droid 2 Global owners): I was able to do the OTA update even though I froze some pre-installed bloatware. I did not thaw them before the update.
Apps I had frozen:
- Amazon MP3
- Backup Assistant
- City ID
- Facebook Authenticator
- Flickr Authenticator
- LastFM Authenticator
- Email (this is Motorola's Blur version of an email app)
- Messaging (Blur)
- Music (original Android version, I freeze it so it doesn't conflict with Music Beta when it connects to my car's bluetooth)
- Myspace Authenticator
- Orkut Authenticator
- Skype mobile (VZW's bloatware)
- Skyrock Authenticator
- V CAST Media Manager (VZW's bloatware)
- Voice Commands (VZW's bloatware)
- VZ Navigator (VZW's bloatware)
- VZW Package Installer (freezing this prevents the reminders to update your VZW bloatware)
- Social Networking
- Social Messaging
- Social Messaging Service
There are more frozen apps, but this gives you an idea.
