Have had multiple Hover SteamVacs. They have worked great for me, and can find them around $120 on sale a lot. But as mentioned, it really depends on how much you plan to use it, and how clean you really want things.
I've had a few throughout the years and my favorite was the Hoover Platinum. Only problem was it got a little bit of carpet fuzz in to it and it seized part of it. $150 to replace, even under their "Platinum 5 year warranty"! So I promptly returned it to Kohls who took it back no questions asked. I then picked up the Hoover Max Extract. It's a simpler version of the Platinum but I have to say it seems to do an equally good job. Another real plus with these models is the carpet is quite dry. It still needs to dry but they seem to take out a lot more water than the cleaners of say 5 years ago.
Kohls frequently has this on sale for this price minus the 30% if you've got the card or a lot of the time you can find a 15%-20% coupon and then get another 10% off through Chase Ultimate Rewards or something.
I personally bought this model from Kohls because of my experience with their return policy. Hoover said on the phone that I broke their carpet cleaner and refused to repair it. I told the lady that it would be cheaper for them to repair it than for me to return it to the store and them have to take it back. She said no store would take it back as it was like 16 months in so I told her fine and promptly returned it w/o issue at all. I wouldn't return it say 5 years later but no way that thing should have broke and Kohls has an excellent return policy. I guess what I'm saying is buy it from a place that has a good return policy as these things are in general known for not being the most durable and buying one for a little less from some random place may cost you more in the long run.
i bought the rug doctor from costco $400
forget how long the warranty is 5yrs? bigger than the small one at stores and a bit front heavy when changing dirty/clean water. stupid design but works like the rentals.
Someone mentioned a Rug Doctor. If you plan to buy a Rug Doctor from anywhere, and are expecting what you get when you rent them, make sure it's the same model number because many times they are a different version. The one commercially available is the Rug Doctor Mighty Pro X3 Carpet Cleaner, and while a decent carpet cleaner it does not deliver the results that the rented Rug Doctor's do.
We had a Hoover that was 5 years old. We replaced it with a Bissell when it wore out and went through three Bissell's in under 5 months (we shampoo carpet monthly and live in a tiny one bedroom apartment and we were not doing upholestry). The Bissell's have one of the worst clean/dirty water systems of any brand I have ever seen. We finally went and got a Hoover SteamVac Dual V Wide Path Extractor from Walmart and we couldn't be happier with it. My boyfriend used to work for Sear's Carpet Cleaning and it's the only one he will use now, it takes hardly any time to fill it and empty it, unlike the Bissell that was truly a two person operation. Love it, love it, love it!
If you want to rent, my local Petsmart had a stack of coupons for $10 off a rental for Bissel's pet-branded steam cleaner. Rentals at my store were priced $24.99/day, minus that $10 coupon. It's just a RugDoctor with euphemisms for cleaning up cat pee. It was cheaper than renting anywhere else, again for just one day with the coupon.
I was also about to post a request for a shampoo carpet cleaning machine, I was thinking of maybe renting and then buying some thing. After paying $800 when I first moved in there is no way that I want to pay that again. I just saw there was a deal on a rugdoctor but it was only a 1 day sale :-(
this wasn't fair, people were probably using crawlers, snakes, auto-fillers, bots, site slower-downers... Dammit
