I have a good tip (well, at least I think its good). I buy the ZICO 33 oz bottles from trader joe's for $3.99. when I first tried it, I didnt care for it but you get used to it and realize how jacked up our taste buds are from all the sugar stuffed into all our foods. However, if you want it a tad sweeter, buy the KAL brand liquid stevia. that stuff rocks and I added several drops to the coconut water and it was kickass. I also only buy KAL brand stevia powder btw, as it has the best taste and least aftertaste. Just remember that the other brands that taste "better" are sweeter and have more sugars and calories. This is the type of tip that would be considered good even for the pickiest people. stevia is obvious in some things like coffee, invisible in dairy (incredible to sweeten plain yogurt and make a breakfast cereal appear sweetened - totally fooled my 5 year old niece and 7 year old nephew - they asked for seconds on cold oatmeal - my sister was blown away). So, save yourself some calories and inflammation and pre-diabetes and use stevia in this product to make it go from good to awesome.
Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes. That way, when you DO criticize them, you're a mile away and have their shoes. :p

BTW, I do believe that both of the brands I mentioned above are pure coconut water and not sweetened.... They usually are on sale for $0.65 - $0.90 each and come in either 12oz or 16oz (?) sizes. Last edited by NewtonFine; 05-02-2012 at 09:21 AM.. Reason: added BTW... |

INGREDIENTS: Coconut Water, Sugar, Young Coconut Pulp, Sodium Metabisulphate (as preservative). So it appears that while I thought I had read the label, I never had. Considering what is in it, I think I would've remembered. I am going to try the Zico+stevia route mentioned by KK, as I would rather avoid the extra sugar myself....

Cool! Very interesting about the sugar as preservative. also extremely obnoxious when you find out after the fact. I even get hoodwinked every once in a while when I am so certain a product is "healthy" that I dont bother looking and then later find out I've been consuming sodium nitrate/nitrite or trans-fat (i.e. did you know that some flavors of Gatorade have/had trans-fat in them?!?!? dont know if thats still the case but I won a free lunch on that bet - and I dont consider gatorade to be healthy but its incredible when I've been sprinting up and down the field playing sports (perhaps I should say "trying to play" lol). I also buy whole foods 365 brand unsweetened vanilla almond milk (if you can get it, its ALWAYS out of stock at my whole foods buy you have to thin most almond milks as they are CRAZY thick. I add lots of water and some stevia and presto! tasty drink. I've also been experimenting with adding coconut milk to almond milk. And whats really great is almond breeze unsweetened chocolate added to the Whole Foods almond milk. for whatever reason, the chocolate gives it a better taste even though it ends up being 30% chocolate and the rest vanilla etc. still waiting for them to come out with unsweetened hazel nut drink. btw, I love milk, it just doesnt love me and has lots of natural sugars in it. I have found sweetened hazelnut but not unsweetened. I look at nut milks being to dairy as solar and battery power are to fossil fuels. If we can ween ourselves from it, we are all better off. (again, I absolutely LOVE milk but just bad for most people eventually and definitely bad for the cows being used to make industrial milk). good luck! feel free to PM me if you want further tips with stevia and tasty stuff etc. Cheers! |
