Just so everyone understands, coffee quality, or value, is not measured by where it was grown. You could have two plots of land right next to one another grown by two different farms and processed in two different ways. Most Jamaican Blue Mountain and Kona (or Hawaiian coffee in general) is ludicrously overpriced for the quality. There are some farms (such as Rusty's) who do a great job. They are a farm on Ka'u that won the latest cupping (tasting) competition in 2011.

So what does the rest of island coffee taste like? Due to climate and fast growing at low altitude it comes out tasting overly smooth. Most of what I've had has tasted like wet cardboard. Overly smooth is not something you want to pay for in wine, beer, or coffee. Paying money for brown water is not smart move, especially if it's insanely priced!
