Yes, you absolutely still need a video card. Even though Intel's HD 4000 is considerably faster than HD 3000, even a low-end video card will be faster. An HD 6870 would crush the HD 4000.

I'm always SOL on these deals. This morning I saw the 3770k in stock and I was hoping to go to Fry's for a PM. Work got the best of me and I didn't leave til 6pm. Drove to Fry's asked for a PM, they said MC doesn't have the 3770k in stock. FFFFFF!!!!!

I just need these 3 components.... i7 3770k, asus sabertooth z77 and a samsung 830 256GB SSD and I'm set.

Dude. they dont have to have it in stock in that particular store. Fry's doesn't know that microcenter does not ship certain intel chips. you can add them to the cart for a reason. Fry's honors internet price matching. so when you price match, you say you're online price matching. not the store.

I did. They had to go online to see if they're in stock.

There were 10+ of i7 3770k units available at Tustin CA store this morning. I was able to add to shopping cart and checked out for in store pickup. I changed my mind and decided to get the i7 2600k because the i7 3770k didn't have 50off on the GA-Z77X-UD5H LGA 1155 Z77 motherboard. It wasn't the best deal compared to the $199cpu recently posted on SD.

I passed on the $199 deal in high anticipation for the new i7 3770k chip. But user reviews indicated high heat issue when overclocked, I decided to save a some money and went for the i7 2600k instead.

i7 3770k would be a fantastic deal if it comes with a $50 off on mobo combo

I need your advice gurus!

I currently have an core i7 870 (stock) but I promised my brother I'll give it to him as soon as Ivy goes out.

I don't know what to pick, i5-3570 or i7-3770. I'm still going to keep the rest of my other computer parts for now

2 x vertex 2 60gb (raid 0) + EVA GTX 460 (will replace maybe on memorial deal weekend sale) + 24gb of RAM

This is what I do with the PC:

1) Browse Slickdeals
2) Heavily play sc2
3) Run 4 Virtual Machines (about 2-3 VMs at the same time) which explains 24gb of RAM
4) When I got my Galaxy Note, I now do I lot of video converting - Animes to be exact - I mean ALOT!
* I use handbrake as my converter. Is it compatible with QuickSync? If not, what should I replace it with?

So what do you think? IB i7 or i5! And this time I'll OC up to 4.3 at least.

EDIT: Is it even worth the upgrade from core i7 870 to i7-3770?

I am upgrading from an 950 i7. the 3570 is more than sufficient for everything, even encoding and converting. the 3770k is what i chose though. I want it my machine to last me a good 4 to 6 years so a 3770k will hold out better for me near it's end life compared to a 3570. it's a core i7 with hyperthreading. so it will definitely help you with converting videos.

Hmm .. I know I'll upgrade again in 2 years. So I'm really not worried about future proofing. BTW, I actually meant i5-3570K not 3570(no K).

If that would be the case, I might want to get the i7-3770k. Do you think there would be a big difference in converting videos from an OC'ed 3770k and OC'ed 3570k?

I know in gaming, there wouldn't be much difference .. but I was wondering if VMware uses hyper threading and video converters.

I'll do a little bit of research on that.

Still if there is a minimum difference between those 2 processors, $150 is actually big .. and I could probably buy a Crucial M4 instead .. decisions decisions ..

my main reason to upgrade is actually because myP6X58D premium doesn't raid and the marvel controllers screw up the speed of my C300 Crucial SSD. i plan on buying two M4s 128 and run them on Raid 0 to have 900+ read/write speeds

If you want to save some money and put it on an SSD. that is a much better idea. saving $150 is good. the best motherboard right now , based on not just features...but also because it's a VERY hot item and hard to come by is the GIGABYTE GA-Z77X-UD5H. Microcenter ran out of it real fast. The thing about using that money for an SSD...there is a price war right now. so it would be smart to wait until prices stabilize. you can buy one cheap now, but prices will continue to fall.

I see. Ok .. I think I'll wait for GA-Z77X-UD5H + I'll just do the 3570k because I actually don't do video editing anyway. I saw that quicksync is virtually the same with 3770k and 3570k so yup .. I'll just go with i5.

However, please let me know if you disagree and I should just go with 3770k + z77x-ud5h
