Either that or you have PMS.BTW I have experience and a well established career, not just an undergrad who plays with computers. I have actually done real hacking as well as designed complex systems, both hardware and software so I understand what a trivial think a simple video card overlock is. Apparently you do not. If you see that as hacking well that says enough about your pedigree to leave it at that. If you believe that the marketing dept defined clock speed is somehow a set in stone value that needs to be followed then again that says all I need to know about your experience and wisdom concerning technology. So go wash that sand out so maybe you will come back in a better mood.

What you apparently were never taught in school was that the memory's refresh rate (measured in clock cycles), and the pipeline width (measured in bits) are the main factors that determine the memory bandwidth. a 128bit pipe at 500MHz can throughput the same amount of data as a 256bit pipe at 250Mhz. This is incredibly basic knowledge, that any self-proclaimed "hacker" such as yourself should know. Now I'm assuming that you're in yoru tweens at best, and do not differentiate between "hacking" and "cracking", but the terms do in fact mean different things. So your vocab lesson for the day little boy is that "hacking" means testing the limits of, exceeding the limits of, or otherwise altering to function in a different way. "Cracking" is the process of attempting to circumvent or break down security, which frequently involves "hacking" to find a method for doing so. Consider yourself learned, young padwan. |

Bottom line: This is the fastest card you can get for $100 out of the box right now, with a nice dual-fan cooler which does make a difference in noise levels and temperature (I would gladly pay a few bucks extra for a dual fan cooler, after my experience with them). I really don't see anything to complain about here. I really don't know why some people are acting like this card kicked your dog. |

Alright, im about to shut everyone up.
Listen to the person that actually own both versions of the card. I bought another gtx 460 for my second computer because I thought it had a great price to performance ratio. Nonetheless, I tested both versions on the same computer to compare performance. At stock (meaning the core clocks of the v1: was at 675mhz and the v2 was at 778mhz). Both the v1 and the v2 were near identical in performance at 1920 x 1080 (4x aa). Now some of you guys might say "so what, I can overclock the v1 just as high as the v2", well you would be WRONG! My v1 is overclocked to 830mhz core and my v2 is overclocked to 980mhz core! I did a little research and found out why the v2 overclocked so much higher and I discovered that the v2 version uses the GF114 design (the same design as the gtx 560) rather than the older GF104. The GF114 overclocks significantly higher than the GF104. For reference, I found this thread that displays the average overclocks for the gtx 560 which help confirm that my highly overclocked v2 gtx 460 was no golden card: http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1580314 --> average overclocks were 971mhz core To conclude, testing both cards overclocked, the v2 performed slightly higher than the v1 in nearly all games and benchmarks (again, this is at 1080p 4x AA). |

As I said, clock speed is irrelevant because the 256 bit version was underclocked from the beginning. With the large amount of headroom available it is extremely trivial (not hacking btw) to bump up the speed to that of these gimped 192 bit versions. Then you have the same clock speed the 256 bit obviously has more memory bandwidth. All other things being equal that would give you a better card. How many times to I need to repeat the same basic argument? Is it really that hard to understand? Some genius Jedi Master like you should be able to get it.

I am so glad there are techy types that keep track of stuff like this. NEVER would I recommend this card to any one that needs performance. Crippling a card and then selling under the guise of GTX is shameful.
Thank you for the info guys! Dylan DRM http://www.defectivebydesign.org/ Quote by my daughter, Her Royal Princess Elizabeth Margaret: "If I was them cows, I'd run away!" |
