has anyone noticed some of the poor reviews of the Gevalia plastic coffeemaker on their website?
http://www.gevalia.com/classic-ge...XSELLPDPRV I already ordered this and have heard lots of good things so I'm not too worried about it since it's only $10. However It would be nice if the coffeemaker doesn't overflow and send grinds into my coffee :/ Similar to what some people on that site are claiming |
I got in on this SlickDeal for a "free" Gevalia coffee maker by placing an order for their coffee back in May. I have done this at least 4-5 times over the past 15 years. I believe I have only used Gevalia's coffee makers during this time. Usually, due to cracking or breaking the coffee pot glass, I have to look for another "Free" coffee maker online and order from Gevalia. They have all been of the same 12-cup type coffee makers. I picked up a new one last May and it stayed in the box until about two months ago, when until just recently, I had "cracked" the glass on my older one (same 12-cup model) when cleaning it in the sink. I remember that when I pulled the new one out it's box I immediately noticed the heavy VOC's of plastic smell coming from the coffee maker. I ran a full pot of fresh water through it to get rid of any debris from the manufacturing process and noted a heavy plastic smell from the heated water during the initial "rinse cycle". I ran another full pot through it to rinse it again. I then set up the coffee maker to make coffee for the next morning and filled it with fresh "filtered" water from my fridge, as I have for years! (yes, my filter is ok as I drink sparkling fresh tasting water from my fridge everyday) The next morning, after tasting the first sip, I spit out the coffee and dumped the entire first cup due to the heavy plastic taste of the coffee. I was shocked at how bad it was - it was like drinking some toxic soup and the taste would not leave my taste buds! I then made another pot of coffee and noted that the plastic taste did not appear to be there. That night, I used the vinegar cleaning solution listed in the manual and put it through 3 full rinse cycles to wash out the vinegar solution. I then set it up again, like I do every night, to make coffee prior to me waking up. The next morning, the plastic taste was still there. I dumped the pot and made another one and noted the plastic taste was not there. Since then, I do not put the water in the water reservoir to sit overnight. I have resorted to only being able to make coffee after waking up. I am unable to wake up to the smell of fresh brewed coffee throughout the house anymore. I also leave open the top of the coffee maker so that the plastic smell (VOC's) does not build up within the coffee maker. I tried again, the other night, to fill the reservoir before going to bed, to automatically make coffee for the next morning and again the plastic taste is still there when it makes coffee in the morning and the water has to sit overnight. I will be contacting Gevalia but it is troubling to read reports on the internet of the heavy plastic taste in coffee makers lately. This is clearly a manufacturing issue of products made in China and this is a quality control issue, as well could possibly be a safety issue. I wonder if the plastic taste that is being brewed in this coffee pot is good for someone's health. ![]() |
