Sac. Black Rifle had these for $99 a while ago and there was a long wait list. I would have purchased 2-3 but they were out and the wait was a month or so. Too bad any savings would be eaten away from transfer fee for the FFL (DROS + fees +tax +shipping = no savings.)
and here I thought .223 and 22LR was the same caliber bullet.
The bullet diameter itself is essentially the same; the casing and other physical aspects of the bullet are significantly different, as one would expect.
I was basically saying that if converting a 5.56mm AR to fire .22LR required changing the barrel, there would be very few 22LR - .223 conversion kits on the market, as it's not really something you can do at the range, or want to be doing to the same gun on a regular basis. Swapping the 5.56mm BCG for a .22LR one takes all of about 10 seconds.
This is msrp for the lower but the discounted codes are great for saving a little extra. I have one and they are great for the price, bought one from a local dealer. Has them in stock same price but doesnt accept cc over the internet.
Out the door you'll be $100 plus $35 DROS plus transfer fee your FFL charges to receive the lower. Bay Area thats $50. So it's a $185 lower really. As much as I'd like to shave weight on mine, I'm not sure its worth it. I could sell my Spikes lower I guess.
While a dedicated .22LR upper is the most expensive route, it will be closer in weight and style to true AR function. Conversion kits are neat, but the barrel twist for .22LR is significantly different as compared to .223/5.56.
Just messing around, likely doesn't matter. If you want the full AR experience with the best accuracy (and doing with cheap with .22LR) a dedicated upper is the way to go.
A M&P 15-22 is not be compatible with standard AR parts (though I have read some will work). It is lighter, and some accuse it of being air-softy. Of course, this is polymer lower, so who cares, right =)
All this said, make your AR and have fun! You may catch black rifle disease (if you don't have it already) and get all kinds anyway - making this whole point moot! It starts with another upper, then might as well get another lower for that upper... These left over parts just need a...
