there is alternate like Crucial (Old Marvell), Plextor (New Marvell), SanDisk Extreme (SandForce) remember, now Intel also using SandForce Controller but with their own firmware. |

As for 500GB for $200; unlike mechanical hard drives SSD's are subject to Moore's law - every 18 months, a doubling of transistors. The cheapest SSD's I've seen recently have been about $0.75 per GB, drop that to $.40 and you have 500GB for $200. Then there's the current glut of NAND memory which is driving this SSD price war. The glut means we could certainly see $.60 in the next few months. I've been buying flash memory for over a decade, I've never seen the price stay high over any given quarter. Once it goes down, it stays down. Also consider that there are a lot more NAND manufacturers than DRAM manufacturers. There's also a vastly larger market for NAND than RAM. NAND is in everything and is used in much larger quantities than RAM; phones, tablets, cars, thumb drives, SSD's toys. With so much NAND made by so many manufacturers, it's harder to price fix and easier for gluts to emerge. Taking all that into consideration, my guess, Black Friday of 2013, a (budget) 500GB SSD for $199. (in other words, 18 months from now, one turn of Moore's crank) Last edited by Larron; 05-03-2012 at 03:26 PM.. |

(Also, the Moore's law interpretation was suspect, but still appropriate enough to the discussion.) |

Intel lists the height as "9.5mm", so this is an 'everywhere else.' This looks like a great 'value drive' (per Intel), for those who must have that brand. There are equal or better drives to be had for less, as others have pointed out. Intel drives are very good. My two 1st Gen (no TRIM) drives running in RAID0 are just as fast/reliable as when installed three years ago. More Americans can name the Three Stooges than can name the three branches of government. |

Intel Samsung Micron Hynix Toshiba SanDisk With the last 2 in a partnership, you could argue that there are really 5 and a half. But I guess I could be wrong, am I missing any? I'm not sure of how many DRAM manufacturers there are, but it seems like there are more than 6. |

Yes, Moore's law is no guarantee over any given 18 month period, but it's held up pretty well over the long term. Most of the NAND manufacturers should benefit from a process shrink over the next 18 months, that alone may cut costs enough to get close to the $0.40 per GB mark.
