Another DIY Electronics Question

2,725 282 May 4, 2012 at 04:24 PM
How would I go about cleaning up power of a USB port.

I want to know because on my friend's laptop, the signal's especially noisy (buzzing). And he insists on using a USB DAC for music. Roll Eyes (Sarcastic)

Decoupling Caps?? laugh out loud

Does it help to add a very small value ceramic capacitor in parallel with any larger value aluminum or tantalum decoupling capacitor? Sometimes using just one value doesn't work well enough, and using just small ceramics can actually cause buzzing or whistling because of a resonance. Or could this be a ground loop problem?

The usual line filter of coils and capacitors, plus maybe a metal box for the DAC, won't do? A coil in series with a capacitor can do a lot better than just a capacitor alone.

Maybe your friend should ask in sci.electronics.design or at ePanorama.net or PhysicsForums.com

National Semiconductor's website has a lot of application notes, but I'm having trouble finding any about quieting down audio interference. They used to have one related to their LM381 preamp chip.

Yea, the source of the interference is also up in contention... It can very well be ground problem, because most laptops don't have a ground pin

hmmmm..
