Thread Details

I was in advance auto picking up a boat load of parts that I bought yesterday. They have a program that will buy back your old car batteries for $5 gift card. They said that they must not be busted, cracked, leaking, etc and they said that it must be an auto battery (not lawnmower or motorcycle). I had one in my trunk that I planned to use as a core when I bought my optima battery last week but there is no core for optima batteries. I was able to cash in my dead battery for $5.

While I was in the store someone else brought in 8 batteries for gift cards. This is an easy way to get rid of those batteries in your garage or on your farm.

I know that you can scrap these at the recycling facility for more but who has time to do that when you are already at the parts store.

It varies with the market. Probably about 25 cents a pound right now. So if your battery weighs over 20 lbs and you have a metal recycler close it might be worth it to go there instead Advance Auto.

This is not by any means a new or slick deal this is a very common practice and almost all the auto stores do this when you purchase a new battery and give in the old one

Hudsnhawke. What you are referring to is different. What you are talking about is a core charge (usually $5-10) when you purchase a new battery. They historically would refund the core charge (usually within 30 days) after you purchase a battery. This does not require that you purchase a battery.
