Washer / Dryer Combo
Moved to a new place that doesn't have included washer/dryer nor a laundromat within convenient distance.I have no idea what I should be looking for in terms of a washing machine and dryer. A repairman who serviced our dishwasher told me to avoid foreign brands (Samsung, LG) and to opt for a top-loading washer, but that's all I really have to go on. I can probably go about another month using a laundromat before I break down, so this isn't extremely time sensitive, but I should probably start paying closer attention sooner than later. Is there a good time to buy (I can't wait until Fall/Black Friday)? And are the washer/dryer sets featured in the weekly ads really on sale or would I have just as much luck going to Costco? |

I'm also looking for a deal and don't want to wait for Black Friday. I'm targeting Memorial Day Weekend for the next "big" sale. I did read in the threads that a user got in on a $300 set from Home Depot on 4th of July weekend. If I miss out on those 2 upcoming dates, I will definitely be looking at Lowes/HD and Best Buy during November.
September/October is when new models come in and older models are closed out. |

Not sure the advice you got on the foreign brands is up to the world around us. If you read some of the threads it will give you a base to figure out brand and price range. In search I put in lg washer and got http://slickdeals.net/newsearch.p...i I've tried just washer and got gobbledygook . So it looks like search brand specific?. I was in sears yesterday and not in the appliance section but on the way out at the online pickup area they had some close outs and there were a set of front load samsung 231 which are a 3.5 cu ft and they were marked at $599. That's a good price but not real familiar with the model. If you go on the 6th of may they have friends and family 15% off. So that's a deal. It's in SLC,Ut downtown store. I also found out there will be another friends and family deal and it's gonna be 30% off and they do that off of whatever something is marked at as the starting point. I've got to call the sales man to find out how to see a time line of those super deals. He had it on a screen but I didn't pay enough attention at that point. |

I'm hunting also, kinda want 4.0 or a little bigger maybe 4.2. I posted the lg 3470 at 824.99 whech was a pretty good starting point for that unit. I would do that model if I could get it for like 650. That would be my hoped for price. At that range I would go either lg or samsung. The sears sales man said all the elite kenmore are made by lg so I wouldn't rule that out if the price was on. |

![]() The repairman suggested staying away from LG and Samsung because, in his words, if and when an electrical component of their machines malfunctions, it's neither easy or cheap to get a replacement part. He also seemed to insinuate that Kenmore/Maytag/Whirlpool brands were more mechanical (less reliance on electronics) and thus were more durable. I'm very certain all my major electronics are foreign made (or at least foreign owned), so I'm not adverse to owning a Samsung/LG product, just that I was advised against it from someone who I would believe knows what they are talking about. I'm just looking for topical advice. For instance, if someone asked about buying a TV in January, wouldn't you recommend them waiting a month for all the Super Bowl sales? Given the lack of Washer/Dryer threads, it's somewhat difficult to gauge the best time to buy. |

Went to Costco today, they only had 3 Whirlpool sets:
Whirlpool Duet 9451 Washer - $829.99 Whirlpool Duet 9610 Dryer - $829.99 Whirlpool WTW5610XW - $619.99 Whirlpool WED5610XW - $619.99 Whirlpool WTW4910XQ - $449.99 Whirlpool WED4910XQ - $449.99 There seems to be no price history for any of these, outside of the 4910's which have dropped about $100/ea in price compared to what they were on Costco.com 50 days ago. Some of these models don't even have exact matches on Amazon. This is worse than trying to find out tech specs on Black Friday doorbusters. |

Looking for some price history? I think the deal with the model #s are ? specific to costco. 5610 would match up with the 5600 and 14 reviews on amazon.
http://www.amazon.com/Whirlpool-W...69-9627169 Teh Whirlpool WTW4910XQ looks like a dryer and a quick look for in the 4900 series doesn't show me a washer till 4950. Did you decide on what you want ? then we can try and hunt a price. Brand/size/model/price. http://www.amazon.com/Whirlpool-3...B004W32FT0 3.5 WTW4910XQ listed some comments on amazon. I've settled on the Kenmore 40272 3.5 cu. ft. Front-Load Washer [sears.com] for $599.99 at Sears. It was an energy star tax-free weekend here in Austin and I saved an additional 5% using my Sears card.
Not anything spectacular, but not too shabby for a washer that got "Excellent" ratings in all Consumer Reports categories except Noise (Good) and Vibration (Very Good) and was the highest rated "CR Best Buy" washer. (from the March 2011 issue) Now I need to pair it with a dryer. I have the Kenmore 80272 7.3 cu. ft. Electric Dryer [sears.com] on hold for $599 at a Sears an hour away; but I forgot to use my Sears card and the dryer isn't an Energy Star appliance (not tax free). I think I can do better, especially after seeing much better dryers go for around the same price point. Unfortunately, most of the washer/dryers at Best Buy/Home Depot/Lowes were priced significantly higher than at AJ Madison, Abt and US Appliance. Last edited by MrCodeDude; 05-29-2012 at 10:01 PM.. |

Ended up canceling the Kenmore 40272 and went with the Maytag MHW9000Y 4.3-cu ft. Steam Washer [ajmadison.com] for $800 at Sears Outlet. (Link for reference only)
It was $200 more, but my parent's neighbor (an appliance repairman) heavily advised against a Kenmore "made by LG" appliance. Plus, the Maytag is a bit bigger and is a nicer/higher-quality model compared to the Kenmore. I'm waiting to pair this with a matching electric dryer (hopefully this week); just wanted to add a final update to this thread for anyone who visits it in the future. |
