The biggest concern for me would be a CCFL backlight losing half its output sitting on for a year. On-off heat cycles are much worse on electronics and just sitting on with the processor idled down doesn't bother me. I have work laptops that have been on for years. Cheap notebooks are going to have cheaper components but at these prices they (unfortunately) become disposable. I can understand the concern but a well spec'd laptop for well under $400 I don't expect it to last more than a couple years under heavier use. My last cheap Inspiron with a desktop Celeron processor that I got almost a decade ago is still kicking but you never know.
