LG AF115 Projector for $999 at Frys

I will not let people buy a projector that isn't even 3D. I will also not recommend a $1000 projector over a $1000 HDTV any day. These just aren't practical for everyday use. Throwing away money

3D projectors suck active shutter glasses suck arse.

Looks like a great buy. I'm very into my pico projector but maybe its time i get a full size as well

Care to explain why it's not practical? As for 3D - I have plenty of friends who have 3D TV's. None of them have watched more than a few hours of 3D on them.

The fun factor of a large screen via a projector should not be underrated. I recall fondly as a kid watching Super 8 films on an old fashioned projector, those were fun movie nights with family and friends. But budget LED projector manufactures still seem obsessed with pico/palm size form factors and their inherent limitations.

The bulbs scared me as well. However, when you think about it going through a bulb every 2 to 3 years is a pretty minor expense. Most of these projectors have bulbs that can be had on eBay for $100-$150. Meanwhile, I've had 2 LCD monitors go bad and my Sammy cost me $250 to fix the capacitors - all in the last 16 months. Point is, it really isn't a choice between a maintenance free option vs a high maintenance option. For many people, an LCD TV will end up costing more in maintenance than a projector.

And you are totally right. There is nothing like sitting 10' away from 120" screen in 1080p brilliance. It is stunning.

We have been enjoying our epson movie mate 480p projector for many years. Replaced the bulp only once. I can't wait for delivery of our new 1080p projector.

Buying a 3D projector right now is partially silly. Games aren't supported at anything higher than 720p (unless you want to play at 24 frames a second in 1080p, which is horrible) and the shutter glasses could use some work. A grand now in a projector like this (normal price $2k) can easily last until the 3D specs are better worked out.

That isn't to say that 3D isn't impressive right now (Avatar is pretty damn stunning on my 55" ST30, and that is half the size of even the smallest image you'd throw with a 3D projector) but it's not an absolute necessity.

As for being practical for everyday use... a set of curtains can go a long way. These things will get bright enough at living room sizes (100-120") that glare isn't a horrible issue. If your main viewing is at night (like most people that work) it's not an issue at all. The same goes for if you've got a dedicated home theater room.

i have a theater room in the basement of my house. which $1000 hdtv would you suggest i put on the wall? can you also suggest a good pair of binoculars for everyone to use? i'll keep my 120" of 1080p projected perfectly on the screen.

i have different rooms with different stuff. we all don't live in single room apartments.

3D is bad for your eyes, I Only like some animated movies in 3d. Also move out of your parents basement and you would have room for one of these bad boys.

My LCD TV screen had to be replaced, fortunately while still under warranty. So yeah - could end up out some cash either way. With several months of work before my basement is finished and ready for a display device, I will probably look for any new LED projector offerings this summer, but will reconsider a traditional bulb projector as well. With a decent price on a projector, I could probably live with a $150 bulb replacement at some point, just don't want to get stuck with a $300 plus bulb charge.
