I very much doubt anyone can be of help. It would be very specific to your personality and those you work with. No one can really say oh Coldwell Banker is soo much better than Remax because the people running one office in one town might be very different to those running another office of the exact same company in that town. What tends to happen is someone decides that they want to go into real estate sales. They pass their exam and then set up an office and then encourage friends and familly who might be out of work and want a change of career to pass the exams and get certified and then join them in their business.
These agents are really independent contractors who set up shop and then hire agents to work under them. It is kind of like a franchise where they pay for the right to use the logo of a national known company on their office and business cards. Often this is a huge amount and the big known realty group places alot of restrictions on things they will allow their franchise to do/ not do.
The other option make your own realty company and do your own marketing and promotion.

I can provide a very general answer as a friend of mine went into real estate a few years ago, but first it will depend on where you are it is not like should I buy a Burger King franschise or Mcdonalds you are asking us if you should start work for a local place that sells Pizza in a mall vs one that sells Pizza near a college. Unless you can tell us the 2 local offices you are trying to compare you won't get a really helpful answer.
that given my feeling from my friend was that Coldwell banker did more "hand holding" but took a bigger chunk of your comission check vs Remax which gave you just an office.
You should go to some open houses and get a feel for the companies as well as talk to your fellow classmates and see where they are going.
You need to figure out who your potential client base will be. Do you plan to work with first time homebuyers? Homeowners? Since you live in Irvine, most buyers are either first time homebuyers or buyers moving up from their existing home.
Where are you getting your leads from right now? Friends? Family?
What location(s) do you want to concentrate most of your resources in? Like flyers, door knocking, dedicated site for the area, blogging, etc.
once you know this, you can then start looking for a real estate company.
Interview the companies you are interested in and see what fits you.
if you need a list, I can pm you a list of companies in Irvine.
