You can't go wrong with Nikon or Canon, but I am not sure about Panny. Owned a couple of entry-level p&s Pannys (~$100-$120) and boy their IQ is horrible comparing to Nikon/Canon counterparts.

I loved this kind of cameras before 4 years as I never owned a SLR.
I have been using SLR'S for the last 2 years tried out 6 SLR'S from canon and nikon , changing different lens etc.. and also I have a pocket
camera when I cant take bunch of lens all the time with me.
I saw a staples deal last time for
$320 and thought wow, I should jump on the SX40 and I did get it thinking zoom lens it features like a SLR, no need to change lens in this like in a SLR or a need for a pocket camera thiking sx40 IS THE SOLUTION, but honestly after trying out SX40 was nothing compared to any SLR .

JUST THE QUALITY of the pictures was bad compared to any LOWEST END SLR.
I returned it on the 14th day.
IF YOU never used a SLR this is great camera.
FOR THIS PRICE JUST JUMP ON IT.

One should never compare a P&S to a DSLR.

Assume a Canon Rebel T3 with lens is $295 (PM, 20% coupon and $25 off) and the SX40 is $215 (PM, 20% coupon and $25 off) which is the better camera for the money? They seem similar? I am a camera noob and have done some google search research, but looking for a little more information from people with experience. Thanks!

The T3, period. It will hold its value too, so if you decide to replace it in a year or 2, you are not going to loose much on it, if anything.

Of course, there is no way you can get that kind of zoom on a T3. If that is a major consideration, the T3 is out of the running.

I know professional photographers have more than one camera-SLR and something from point-and-shoot series. They are totally different and for different applications and there is no way you can see one as a substitute for another or compare apples to oranges

Ok another question. I assumed that the SX40 is like a poor mans SLR as it is not quite point and shoot pocket size, yet can not have any lenses attached to it. Is the SX40 really point and shoot like in terms of picture quality just with more zoom?

Today morning I tried using PM with Frys and 20% off coupon on top it at Staples in North Fort worth. I was told they cannot do both and only PM or 20% coupon. I still went ahead and bought SX40 ($280 AC) and SX150IS ($120 AC) Will decide what to do. Since they had both in stock and last ones.

Most cameras today can provide stunning results in the hands of the right person. Dslr's have the advantage of a larger sensor which generally results in better low light performance (ie, higher iso). They also are much faster in terms of shots per second, the buffer size (how many shots in a row), and have a faster AF system. The advantage of interchangeable lenses can be appealing to many as you can get specialized lenses for different applications.

For many casual users, bridge cameras such as the sx40 are a good trade off between value and performance. Personally I have 2 dslr's, a normal one and a infrared/full spectrum conversion, a bridge camera and a p&s and use them for different things...

The bridge camera (kodak z990) I use in bad situations like on a fishing boat in saltwater so if something happens to it, it's not the end of the world...

The Point and shoot (Canon sx130 IS) I got on a whim because it was only $35 on a slickdeal I figured out...and I have been using it for ebay listings and just as a carry around type camera...

I haven't tried it but I don't think 20% off coupon works on T3. Otherwise definitely get the T3.
