Decent deal, but hdd prices are still a tad too high for my liking for me to jump in on this now.

I really want to jump into the NAS thing here. And this seems like a great deal (free shipping with shoprunner, btw).

Can anyone with NAS experience answer a couple things:

1) Even though a newer model is likely to come out soon (when is that not the case, though, right?) it seems like this model is more than enough for a RAID5 setup for "backups" and media serving, right?

2) With the above goals in mind, there's no advantage in moving up to the DS411+II, is there? Clearly the +II has more RAM and a better processor, but for simple "backups" (I know RAID isn't backup, but just roll with the phrasing for now, thanks) and media serving simultaneously to no more than 2 devices, the straight 411 should be enough, right?

3) My only concern, as others have mentioned regarding the 212j, is that there may not be enough processing power to do photo and video editing on the NAS, rather than working with it on my desktop and then resaving it to the NAS, which would be nice.

I looked at the newer unit(s). Double the price for double the performance, double the power requirements, and apparently a weak power supply that tends to fail and leave you without a NAS. I felt the older unit was a better and far cheaper option for me. 100 Mb/s read and close to 50Mb/s for write in Raid5 is plenty good enough for me. It should be plenty for your application as well. If you are doing professional work, you might want the 411+ or 412+ their read rates are approaching 195 mb/s. Not necessary in a media server role.

I got this for about $428 out the door with a 3 year warranty extension for a total of 5 years coverage. I actually bought this weekend, but Newegg gave me the $66 coupon credit (15%) when I called them this morning. Great deal.

I love my LG NAS but with only 2 bays it left my data vulnerable to a hard drive failure. I'll use it for backup duties after I get this set up.

Great deal I was hesitant about the deal just a few days ago on newegg, and figure this will induce me to pull the trigger!

What made this for me was the ability to put 5 years of warranty under a NAS that will be operating 24/7.

Would this be suitable for windows backups in a domain environment?

Man, I want to pull the trigger on this and 4 of those 3TB Caviar Green drives, but even after all discounts the total is still over $1k. Damn.

It's hit or miss on amazon price match with coupons.

BTW where did you look at the DS412 info? i know DS412+ is out but don't seen any info on DS412

Do you really need 9TB of usable storage? If not, get a 2-bay Synology device (DS212J, DS212, or DS212+) and save significant money. I went with the DS212+ & two 3TB Seagate drives (giving me 3TB of usable space) for $640.

How many servers do you need to back up simultaneously, and do you already have a Domain Controller? The Synology won't act as a DC.
