Get the polk audio monitor 70's. I bought them off new-egg and can't be more pleased other than one of my tweeters broken and new-egg refusing to replace it because i throw out the box. Also bought a polk audio center speaker and the Bic F12 sub woofer. Buy them in pieces, this way when your price goes up a little bit you can afford more. thank goodness polk replaced them but it they take forever to ship.
$199 monitor 70x2
$158 Bic American F12 sub woofer used on amazon
$129.99 Polk Audio CS2 Series II Center Channel Speaker
This is what i paid but prices are a bit higher now but wait till super sale on newegg and they will go back down.

any of these forums can give you excellent advice on a 5.1 setup.
my biggest suggestion is that you should spend LESS on speakers than the subwoofer if you want a good 5.1 setup.
I currently have:
upstairs (wife will not let me put up a sub lol)
polk monitor 50c II (160 for the pair)
ONK TXSR605 (5 years old this year crazy!) (350)
polk fronts and center channel ($90 each or so)
svs sound sb-12 (600)
I know those are out of your price range but i wanted to show you the recommendation of more on subwoofer than rest of speakers together. when you can afford the svs they are dreamy. i long for one on my denon
