Gift for Professors

Hello. I don't know if this is the right place to post a thread like this.

Anyways, I'm graduating in couple of weeks with my M.A..
I would like to give my thesis chair a gift as a gesture of appreciation as completing my thesis wasn't possible without her being my advisor.

What would be the great gift to give professors?

How much is too much to spend? (I do not want her to feel uncomfortable).

I'm thinking of flowers or a gift card to local restaurants.
Are they too generic? Also, I'm not sure if giving a gift card is okay (although they are not hard cash...).

Any idea is appreciated!!

I think those are pretty decent ideas, unless you can think of a gift in your related field that's either funny or commorative of your time together. I know science geeks will get like xkcd comics or FarSide comics framed. Something like that is always fun.

Seriously, IMHO a hearty handshake and a sincere thank you should be enough. Then if you want to get crazy, I'd give them a nice handwritten card or note. It really depends on your relationship with them as to whether a gift would seem awkward in a situation like this.

Be careful. Some universities have strict guidelines on professors accepting gifts from students. One time I gave my advisor a book that I thought he would like, and he told me that he couldn't take it. So instead I gave it to his wife and told her to let him borrow it.

In any case, make sure that you don't inadvertently get your advisor in trouble!
