 The Avengers: Why Pirates Failed To Prevent A Box Office Record Despite the widespread availability of pirated releases, The Avengers just scored a record-breaking $200 million opening weekend at the box office. While some are baffled to see that piracy failed to crush the movie’s profits, it’s really not that surprising. Claiming a camcorded copy of a movie seriously impacts box office attendance is the same as arguing that concert bootlegs stop people from seeing artists on stage.On one hand the MPAA claim that piracy is killing the movie business and yet ... here we are with a movie breaking weekend box office records even with a pirated release a week early. Will the MPAA ever stop crying wolf? |

Pirated copies are only good upon DVD release. Until then they are just shitty camcorder versions. That is why Piracy will never affect a movie's revenue.
Also I'm curious are these box office records taking into account inflation? |

It's easier to blame piracy than put out a quality product. So the mpaa will continue to blame piracy.
The amount of competition for the entertainment dollar is insane these days, I feel like they fail to realize that. |

Fact. Avengers exceeded expectations for me.
Also, as good as my home theater is, it's no replacement for a sixty foot 3D screen and twenty-thousand (or is it 100,000?) watts of sound coming from a 9.1 system (with eight subwoofers running the single channel). <3 RPX.  This is why I don't pirate movies.... shit ass quality. I'd rather pay to see it in the theatre, especially if it's sci fi. |

However, going to the theater can be fun, especially on opening weekend of big blockbusters. The polls were not skewed, biased, oversampled or wrong. I was. There was no wave, no landslide, I was wrong about that too. Nate Silver is the gold standard of polling analysis.
