Ok, I did some research and found this icon which toggles the lighted keyboard off and on. I'm not sure if HP standardized this key on all ENVY laptops to make the build easier but it's worth seeing if the laptop you have has the F5 key icon.

Oh and one last thing, I went to HP's website, and it already had 3 required updates, 1 for the bluetooth, 1 for the Wifi, and 1 software update. You may want to confirm your machine is up to date here http://www8.hp.com/us/en/support-drivers.html

Anyone having touchpad issues? Mine keeps freezing up and it's virtually useless.
Left&Right click buttons still work though for some reason. Am i missing something here?

After installing synaptic drivers, everything works well, including multitouch gestures. However, I still abhor this touchpad. The texture impedes the use of the touchpad and generally the lack of separate physical left and right click buttons is a hugely cumbersome to use, when it registers a gesture rather than a click.

Where can I find another touchpad of similar size to replace this one? Maybe the ones on the other envy lines?

ya the placement of the buttons isn't great. I kinda have to use both hands. it's annoying to use when i am doing stuff like excel.

sounds like i need to re-install touchpad drivers...

So I'm going to buy a Samsung 830 to put in this baby, and I just was wondering what I need to perform this operation? I've never installed an SSD before..is it easy?

And also, how am I going to download windows onto the SSD if it's originally on the hard drive? I don't understand that part..thanks!

Its not very simple, check out the earlier posts, but not difficult either if taking out 20 screws doesn't scare you.

You can create a full back up and restore it to get Windows back or what I did was that I just installed Windows 8 Release Preview

Yea, I've opened up a computer before so that's no problem. I was just wondering if I need any tools besides buying the Samsung 830 SSD? Or is it just that, a screwdriver, and my hands?

I'm also planning on selling the 500GB HDD with the laptop, hopefully I can make a nice penny of that. They seem to be selling for ~$70 on eBay.

And is that the same process of doing a clean install? I'd like to start with a fresh install to make in nice and snappy, but I'm not sure how to get Windows 7 back on the computer.

All you need is the installation disk. Of course you'll have to make sure that you're loading the same O/S that's on the computer now (since that's the license key you'll be using) or as someone else has mentioned, you can try your luck with Windows 8. I've seen the reviews and I think I'm going to pass on Windows 8 for now.


Also, how does everyone feel about the iBeats earphones that came with the laptop? I don't think they're great earphones, but it's a nice touch. I saw them on E-bay for $80 so I may throw them on there and with the $25 HP credit they gave me, I'll have bought my laptop for under $400!





Oh and I'm just joking, those earphones didn't come with the Laptop, but I'm going to see if the Beats software sounds any good with those earphones......Heh, I bet you bastages were thinking you threw the headphones away with the box!!! MUWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! I'm an evil mofo, I know....

Negative, it came with a recovery partition but the only way you're going to get it into a new drive is by cloning the original. Best bet would be to just get an install disc and start fresh, unless you want to weed out all the crapware again.

You can also try the disk cloning route. Basically, your existing HDD will be copied over and shrank down to fit into the SSD. You'll need a USB to SATA cable or enclosure to connect the SSD first to a USB port, then clone the HDD to SSD using one of the software in the link below, and then finally install the SSD into the computer.

As for the disk cloning software, Acronis True Image is the most consistent that I've used so far, as it automatically shrinks down the HDD image to the SSD's size. It's kinda spendy at $40, but goes on sale from time to time.

Here's a list of other disk cloning software, with some free ones. Not everyone in the list is capable of shrinking HDD images to fit into SSD.
