Taxes for online shopping in Illinois?

I reside in Canada and I'm doing some online purchases. Many companies don't allow international shipping, so I have it sent to my friend in Chicago. I heard a while ago that the state of Illinois is imposing a tax for these transactions. Can someone please confirm, and if it's true can someone tell me how I can figure out what the tax rate is?

for instance, I just made a purchase from Brea, CA 92821. the total is $22 (no mention of taxes in the invoice). Can someone please advise? thank you

If you bought the item from a company that doesn't have a warehouse in illinois then there is no tax. For example newegg, amazon, buy.com etc have no offices or warehouses in illinois so there is no tax on the purchase. You are supposed to, however, report the purchase on your tax return the following year, but not many if any actually do.

Just because you made the purchase from CA doesn't mean anything. What was the company? a single store or chain?

Then one day I got a bill from the State for $600 for taxes the credit card company gave them all my transaction information with the tobacco store I bought from. I guess they could do the same thing with other purchases.

That's weird. How recent? I'm in Chicago, IL and I haven't been taxed on Amazon purchases shipped from outside of the state.

Did you purchase it from Amazon or a 3rd party reseller that had a business in Illinois. Remember amazon 3rd party is like ebay, no difference really. If the seller has a shop in Illinois you are charged tax. Amazon has no stores here thus no tax.

So technically you did not buy from amazon, you bought from joe shmoe out of his moms basement.
