"The cloud" in this instance doesn't actually exist, its just a marketing buzz word used to grab your attention. This is a network-accessible storage device with remote access, nothing more. If you want cloud storage you need a provider to centrally store your data. Also, don't confuse that for backup either. Services like Carbonite aren't cloud storage either, just online backup and recovery.

Edit: I have the My Book World Edition II and it is horrible, if this is anything like it I would steer clear. Slow, buggy, and it killed two hard drives in 5 months because they don't believe in fans to cool the unit.

Why not just get 2TB of real cloud storage and forget the external HDD?

Um... okay troll... I'll bite. The cloud would be services like dropbox, google drive, etc. that store your data on multiple servers (that are backed up real-time) and allow for remote access.

The point of my question was to confirm that this is not a robust backup solution and that WD isn't also keeping a copy of your data saved on their servers. Yes, if your computer hard drive fails, this drive will do a great job of preserving/recovering all your files and data, and will even let you access that data remotely over the web. If, however, your house burns down with your computer and drive in it, you are truly screwed. Try remoting into this drive over the internet after a catastrophic fire, and let me know how that goes and how much data you can recover.

I guess what I'm getting at are there any providers out there which offer cloud backup and storage? Dropbox, Google drive, and Box -- seem great at the storage part, but don't offer a robust backup solution that I'm aware of. There are a few providers that come up when I google this topic, but I've never heard of any of them. Perhaps some of the more tech savvy SD'ers have some recommendations.

to me real cloud storage at least has minimum standards beyond having an HDD plugged into my desktop in my living room. If someone spills a beer it's all she wrote. A legitimate cloud would offer some reprise for this and also some assurance my data is safe and ideally replicated in case of natural disaster, etc.

Any device that plugs into a network and provides a service to one or more end nodes is a cloud service.

Now this might be a rather unreliable implementation of such, but it's a cloud service none-the-less
