Free fileserver recommendations?

I am running windows 7 64 bit and want to access my home files etc via IP. I am using subsonic for media but I need something for pdfs, docs, etc. Can anyone recommend a free program that I just install on my computer and can access via the web? Thanks.

Microsoft's Skydrive. You COULD get 25GB for free, but they are dropping that to 7GB, but I think somehow through that you can also get remote access.

Just do ftp and use dyndns to resolve the ip with dynamic ip address from isp.

Logmein Free version maybe? It really depends if you are looking just for a file once and a while or want ot do more than that. None of these cloud services (Skydrive, Google Drive, Dropbox etc) are fileservers.

Most ISP's do not allow users to host FTP's.

For business/hosting a website, but personal use its ok.

I guess I just want to be able to browse my computer for any files that I would ever need, and not have uploaded to dropbox etc. FTP would make the most sense I guess but isnt it a pain to set up?

No the opposite. For consumers its against the TOS, if you are on business class its acceptable.

I would use a LogMeInFree product then. Remote access your computer run programs, and more. It works well and you can login from the browser easily. https://secure.logmein.com/products/free/

Log me in is messier than Skydrive for just accessing files. It's more of a remote control app for a computer. Takes too long access the files.
and you have to use the PAID version to have file transfer ability.


The "new" Skydrive will do this exact thing you want for FREE (access to all files on all computers with skydrive app installed)
It'll be faster than Log me in anyhow for what you want to do.

Try it... its easy and what you are looking to do.

As long as the app is installed you can use two-factor authentication (message to cell phone) to access ANY of your computers ENTIRE harddrives as long as they are on at that time...from anywhere with internet securely.

Works great. Plus you get 7-25 GIG cloud storage with a big 2GB upload file limit.

Its a new feature...same as the 2gb file limit. Skydrive is much better now.

To access your computers they will be listed on the left hand side on your Skydrive.com as long as they have the windows app installed. If they are on you will be able to acces their hard drives as long as "Allow fetch" is on (default)

Once both computers joined the personal network by using free version logmein hamachi, from one of them copy the other one's IPv4 address, go to start->type "\\<ipv4 address> and then browse the shared files. It's a VPN tunnel so once it's installed, you can access the computer on personal network anywhere as if your computers are on the same LAN.

Honestly I really don't like their remote desktop UI so I keep using ultraVNC/tightVNC through hamachi VPN network.

Yeah that works also I've used Hamachi prior. I just think Skydrive is simpler and easier+ some Cloud storage. Less techy.
I think most of the recommendations were for the remote control Log me in, not Hamachi log me in.
