Just get an SSD. These things consumer too much power and really aren't that fast.

I've had 8 different models of Seagate drives die on me. One thing you can count on with Seagate is a high failure rate, regardless of model#. Pass. |

SLC NAND should be quite reliable.
These are not as fast as SSDs, but they are faster than regular laptop hard disks. For desktop machines, there is the option of using a small SSD as a cache with a 3.5" hard disk. Intel offers this feature for two of its motherboard styles, while OCZ and another company (that I know of) offers this as a product. OCZ's software allowed up to 64 GB SSDs to be used for caching.

A guy I work with bought a drive caddy [amazon.com].
In essence it replaced the DVD ROM on his laptop and holds another drive. In his case he went with a cheapo 64GB SSD. Loaded OS on the SSD, changed boot order and he got the best of both worlds. The SSD is fast at booting, the original HDD for storage. |

I don't know if Windows Experience Index produces the same drive results from one computer to the next, but would anyhow know what WEI Hard Disk Data Transfer Rate score to expect from this?

I can say from experience of both the XT and an SSD (Mushkin 120GB Chronos). SSD is consistently faster but the XT is not exactly slow. It's similar during normal operations as my desktop WD Caviar Black. And the XT will beat the WDCB at straight Win7 boots even though I have more crap installed on my laptop vs my desktop. If you need a lot of space in a laptop and want a speed boost too, go with the XT. If you can live with much smaller disk space with extreme speed, go with the SSD. |
