I have done this actually. I've used it to restain a bunch of outdoor wood furniture as well as a deck. IMO it works pretty darn good. On the furniture you get some overspray and waste but on a deck it worked great. I used to roll out the stain on a deck using a paint roller (more or less) and sometimes got too much. Putting it down with this and then rolling over it or using pads/rags seems to give considerably consistency with smaller risk of putting down too much. I now have a dedicated stain sprayer just because it works so well
