For most things, the 40pc with deep sockets and 3/8" wrench, which goes all the way up to 7/8" and 19mm down to 8mm I believe, is the better all around set. I have 2 of these and love them. I have another 1/4" set and I haven't even opened it yet. I just never have a use for those sizes.
If I could remember where the Lowes is around here I might go pick one of these up. I like having a cheap set to do adjustments sometimes. It's handy if one of your buds needs help with his car or you need to swap a battery or something.
I bought one of those $10 sets from Wal Mart and the socket snapped my first time changing brakes.
The 40 piece set is probably something I'd keep at home. The 1/4 set is fine for small stuff though. My civic uses 10mm and 12mm frequently.
If you're going to need leverage though, I'd probably go with the 3/8.
Kicking myself though. I'd had a cheap ratchet with a 10mm Snap On socket I've been using for the past 10 years and recently lost it. DOH!
You can swear by your refurbished stuff all you want, but I have first-hand experience, and would NEVER buy anything refurbished.
Why do you think refurbished stuff is so cheap? The manufacturer gets defective products returned and unload them to 3rd party vendors cheap who try to entice you at 20% discount off retail.
