If you want a $30 solution that should make your machine a fair bit faster, you might want to consider one of the following.

The upgrade to 2gb ram will speed it up a bit, but not if you have done nothing to preform maintence on the machine. I see nothing here about you cleaning out cookies, temp files, temp internet files, or recent files on the computer. When one uses a computer for years with no maintenance, it slows down. Just a month or so on a new computer with no cleaning causes slow downs. Use Ccleaner to clean it up, put in the new RAM and see how you do. I'm not sure how old your Windows XP install might be -- if it's over 2 years, you might want to consider backing up your data and reloading it. There could be a lot of leftover stuff from progams you installed and not longer use -- stuff that has been uninstalled but left fragments, etc.
Get Ccleaner Slim with no toolbar [ccleaner.com] You will still need to uncheck all the extra shortcuts you don't need . . . Be sure to update before running it.
Get Malwarebytes free edition [cnet.com] Be sure to update before running it. Get SuperAntiSpyware free edition (SAS) [cnet.com] Be sure to update before running it. |

To start buying for a new rig would this be a okay motherboard? http://slickdeals.net/permadeal/7...4#comments
I believe they said it can run some I3's, but also the Pentium G series, where some of the Pentium G's will be a better value and work just fine, somewhat comparable to the I3's. Also would the G620 be able to run Simcity(2013)? Thats pretty much one of the games that I will be interested in playing. I plan on buying a laptop soon, and using most my money on that though. |

What is your upgrade budget? It would help a lot for us to know. We might be able to guide you to something that you could buy for now that is expandable.

I have the exact same machine and you'll really see the difference upgrading to 2Gb of memory.
Without a Sata card there it will not be possible to upgrade to a SATA HD. I've used one of the SATA to IDE converter cards but it won't work on Dell 2400, 2350, or 3000 Dimensions because of space. I'd make sure that's your on the latest BIOS level. Silly question but did you turn on Hyper threading CPU in BIOS? If you haven't you not getting the bang for the buck that you should by upgrading to the 3.2 HT Pentium. |
