This is a very good point - without proper application, thermal compounds are useless.
You'd be better off with a crappy heatsink and fan with proper thermal paste applied,
than with a high end heatsink and fan with poorly applied thermal paste.

Most thermal paste is equally good. Arctic Cooling MX-2 = Arctic Silver 5 = Arctic Ceramic = Other Good TIM. HardwareSecrets.com did a test of dozens of thermal paste, found that all the good brands you hear about equally good, and within 1C of each other. Just go with what's cheapest.

Except that it doesn't. As long as you don't use too little compound, or way too much, you're fine.

I still haev the original Artic Silver from the late 90's and it works fine. I keep it in the fridge so that it doesn't separate (along with Ceramique, and some CA glue and batteries).
