I work in the financial sector and we have tons of security on our network. Users who want email access on their mobile phones must be approved and the phones must be brought in to the IT department to be set up for access. Changes must be made in Active Directory on our servers to allow them access. The users MUST set up usernames and passwords to be able to access email through our Email Exchange Server to prevent access from unauthorized users. If the user loses the phone, or if the phone is stolen or they change phones, we have an option through our servers to wipe the phone and make it as though it is a new, blank phone. Get Ccleaner Slim with no toolbar [ccleaner.com] You will still need to uncheck all the extra shortcuts you don't need . . . Be sure to update before running it.
Get Malwarebytes free edition [cnet.com] Be sure to update before running it. Get SuperAntiSpyware free edition (SAS) [cnet.com] Be sure to update before running it. |

The only problem I am having is send out emails from my phone and TP. I figure if I were encountering any security issues I would not even be receiving emails in the first place. |

Anyhow, what are the settings that IT states are supposed to work? Is secure authentication required? I would think it would. What security type is required? What SMTP port? I know you have played around with various settings and configurations but what does IT definitively state these settings should be? |

Here they are again: SMTP server: 'smtp.companyname.com' Security Type: 'STARTTTLS (accept all certificates)' Port: '587' Require sign-in box is unchecked |

OK, the IT guy just came over and tried again...still no luck.
This is the error message received after entering the outgoing settings: Cannot connect to the mail server to verify your account information. Your server is not responding. And these are the settings he just tried (which he said should work): SMTP server: 'imap.companyname.com' Security Type: None Port: 993 Require sign-in box is unchecked He has an Android phone too and his works fine. Of course he has a rooted phone with an older version of Android. He says he doesn't update his firmware. |

That's odd. IMAP over SSL uses port 993, IMAP without SSL uses port 143, traditionally. I'm shocked SSL isn't a security type to be used.
It might take having your network ops to verify that traffic from your phone is coming across the network and then it might take email ops to verify whether the server is seeing anything from your phone and then seeing what it logs as a response (discard, log and ignore, etc). I'm sure it's some small detail we're overlooking that is not so easy to see without being there. |

Well, yeah, it's something simple that we aren't seeing. I'm thinking the Active Directory account for this user needs to have OWA enabled, or something else. OWA enabled would allow him to 'get' email from Exchange, but not necessarily allow him to 'send' from that account.
Companies with "big" security will have an appliance that monitors incoming traffic and another that monitors outgoing traffic on Exchange. Perhaps firewall rules need to be put into effect for his outgoing traffic on the phone. |

The IT guy seems to think it's some kind of issue with my phone specifically. His suggestion was to just get an iPhone ![]() I have an HTC Inspire 4G phone |
