Should the slickdeals thread be member-only?
I don't know what you all think about it, but since new posts are not allowed there anyway, this is my suggestion. Make them member-only. Even for reading. This way we won't get stuck with like 350+ posts in couple of hours about the Karma MP3 player for a hilariously low price, and more than half of posts are from unregistered people. In addition they turn into flame bait posts, which blame someone who got 30 pieces of certain hardware for resale. Of course, it's a tough decision, but I think it's reasonable. In addition to this, it's easier to moderate registered users. Then again if mods don't mind this, I am cool too. Just a thought....from a relative old-timer. Last edited by redsolar; 10-22-2003 at 08:22 PM.. *NEW* SlickBlog - we talk to you, you talk to us

Doesn't that begin the problem of when people just sign up once and don't post anything? They're registered as soon as they sign up aren't they? And if we have a minimum post thing where certain avatars can visit certain boards, we'd have spamming like hell. Maybe 20 BS posts in a day and they're well on their way. And there are other sites which post the same deals and so making these boards members only wouldn't really eliminate the problem of people not registered finding out about the deals completely.
Regulation is more costly than just letting them do their thing. It's difficult to get people to not leech off these sites. |

My thoughts are this... If you register, you have respect for the people who go out and get these deals... When I first came aware of Slickdeals from a friend of mine, I did the same thing... just surfed here serveral times a day... but then I realized how hard these guys work and I also realized I may actually be able to find a deal of my own and share it one day... earn respect from the guys and girls who read the forums... But since I've joined... I've noticed where several people just pass by here grab the deals, post some crappy message, and then you never hear from them again... Now the only down side to having to register for this service is the fact that the creators probably get a kick back for each person who goes through here and especially for a person who makes a purchase from the banner ad. But still... They would have a better chance of a registered user clicking that button than a non-registered person... Do you agree?

Member-only thread will give people the feeling of being a part of the community, and possibly make them spam less. I am not talking about the ability to do some things (like change avatars and user levels) when you reach certain number of posts. Thanks to all the mods for supporting the site, and thanks to all who find the deals, whether good or bad. .

I placed my vote. But I think this could be a double edged sword. People will sign up just to post and never contribute, on the other hand, it may force a great slickdealer to come out of his/her closet and start posting great deals like myself.

Maybe for each slick deal we could have a members only thread, and an 'anyone thread.' That way we could choose to ignore the unreg scum, kinda like we can now ignore the sticky magazine request thread.
It wouldn't weed out everyone, but would probably cut back a lot on useless posts from unreg's. meh

Is it really that bad? I appreciate the time and effort that the slickdeals finders put in, and I wish I had more time to do it for others. But, all the complaints about multiple posts and spamming aren't all that bothersome. If you saw it posted before just skip over it. IMHO. And we don't want to hinder the possibility of a slickdeal do we?

i too respect the work that goes into this not only by mr. slickdeals but all the other deal finders. i was a loyal slickdealer for about 3 or 4 years now but only this month did i actually register. i didn't feel a need to register, i posted the same way i do now. i don't flame, i ask for input, help if i can, and also put my two cents in like this. i think it will keep the casual flamer away, but is there anything really wrong with getting nearly 1000 posts for that mp3 player? it was interesting to read them. my point if there is one (not really sure) is that i don't like sites that make you register to read. there is nothing that equates respecting people and registering. edit- jsut remembered something else, i check the site about 5-10 times a day. i tried to get my frineds hooked on the site but none of them do, so when there is a really good deal like that donut survey i tell them go here and look. well if they have to register first they probably won't. it all depends on how much of a problem it is to have board spammers. The friend says, 'Yeah, but I've been down here before and I know the way out.'" |

Trolls will be trolls...
I like the way is is now; I was new to the site, and enjoyed reading the slickdeals threads. They are what encouraged me to sign up in the first place. Making slickdeals threads members only, even just for read access, will make this an exclusive club, and will drive away potential deal seakers, in my opinion.

Another way to do it
Just had a thought; instead of relying solely on the number of posts a member has, why not check the number of days/weeks a member has been registered? This would be the equivalent of a waiting period to buy a gun; sort of a cooling off period. It might deter annoying trolls who want to get in here and create havoc.
