Can't connect to computers on network using names
Not sure what setting I am missing here, but something isn't right. Using a Windows 7 laptop to connect to shares on an XP machine on the network. Do this all the time with another laptop, so I know the network and XP machine are fine.Messed with homegroup, workgroup and other sharing setting (found out that most are useless and complete lies). At one point, I found that I could connect to the network computer by just punching \\192.168.1.100 into my explorer window. After doing this, I could then connect to the machine by using the computers name in Remote Desktop as well as the explorer window. Sadly, the moment I reset, my laptop forgets the computers name so I have to punch in the address again. Does anyone know what idiotic button or setting I have missed out on in this laptop that say uses computers names for network connections? |

Make sure that all computers are in the same Workgroup. I never use Homegroups, especially not in a mixed OS environment.
Windows Firewall turned off or set to allow File and Print Sharing? Is File and Print Sharing enabled on both machines? Any other firewalls on either machine besides Windows Firewall? Have you set Sharing on the folder/files being shared so that Everyone has at least Read & Change rights or Full Control? Have you set Security on the folder to allow Read, Write, and List Contents at the least? |

On win7 laptop put down the IP address and the hostname of the winXP share machine in
C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts and WINS server or local DNS server would do better job if you have a lot more clients wants to connect to the share by using \\<hostname> |
