The reason the drive is "slow" is so it can draw less power and is capable of running off a single USB port. I could be wrong but I don't think you can find a 1tb drive that runs at 7200rpm powered only by a single USB port at any price. Some day there will be a portable 1tb SSD drive that will blow this thing away but it will be a while
With that said, it would be nice if the drive had the ability to adjust its speed based on how much power was fed into it in case you wanted to hook up a power adapter to it, but I do not know of a portable drive that has this feature as of yet.
"USB 3.0-powered portable add-on storage"
If I don't have USB 3.0 on my computer, would USB 2.0 still provide power to this unit? TIA.
I have this drive and it will run off a single USB 2.0 port but it's an unfortunately reality that many systems, especially laptops, do not pump out enough power to the USB port and in these cases, a USB Y cable will solve this common issue.
Many negative reviews are because of this power issue. Also, keep in mind that many similar portable drives have negative reviews so I wouldn't single this specific model out as a "death star" type of drive. For $70, roll the dice... or not.
