LG and Samsung have a showroom picture setting on their TVs. It really makes them look significantly better than the Competition in the Showroom. Sony sets do not have this setting but are amazing as is so they look great even in those poor conditions. Panny's are the same way just not quite to the same extent. Of all the brands I have owned or used Panny and Toshiba benefit from adjusting picture settings the most. They really come to life. LG sets typically don't improve much. Samsung and Sony sets improve a little from default.

While I am a home theater and electronics enthusiast, I do not consider myself an audio/video expert by any means. However, DO NOT ever base your decision on a television by walking into a big box store such as Best Buy and looking at the picture quality!

First, the entire store is illuminated with bright, harsh florescent lighting. All of the televisions have their setting cranked up to torch mode to help compensate for the lighting. The settings are also cranked way up because most people are clueless and deem that a brighter picture equals a better picture. You also have no idea of the source material on the televisions and how it is connected.

If you are serious about buying a quality television do your homework! There are plenty of audio/video forums out there where people with way my knowledge than myself will be glad to give you an honest opinion on just about any make and model television set. Finally, after buying the television please do not just hook it up and go. Some simple calibration to dial in the settings will enhance the life and picture quality of your television greatly!

100% in the same exact situation. Have been looking for a while, and besides a few impossible to get Target closeouts, there hasn't been anything good out there for TV's in this size and price range. I would even go up to $600. Can't find any deals at all.

Thanks op purchased a 47 for the bedroom. great if you don't want the buzzing from a plasma and the heat it puts off plus power saving of the LED if you fall sepal with it on . I have a PN59D6500 and a PN64D8000 both buzz noticeably but PQ is great on them.

TC-L42E30 price dropped to $550.00 on Oct 28, 2011. Will this happen again this year? Wink Wink...........only 5 months away......

I bought the E30 last year then returned it a few weeks later due to bad backlight leakage, really bad. If the new E50 model has this problem fixed, I can't wait to switch to LED HDTV. My ST30 is awesome but the heat it generates is too excessive, especially during hot summer months.

5 months is a long time to wait on a sale though. If you don't need one now, then sure. But waiting for a BF deal in late May seems extreme.

How does this TV compare to the Samsung, Toshiba, or LG in the same price range? I may purchase this at Best Buy for $100 more, but only to take advantage of the 36mo. financing. I also like the idea of being able to easily return it if there are any problems.

Is it worth it at $899?
