How to edit cookies:

"in firefox, add the add-on 'cookies manager'
or in chrome, add the extension 'editthiscookie'

basically a few steps:
1. open up the extension / addon after viewing bananarepublic site (and it says 30% off at the top banner)
2. find gap.com cookies and search for the cookie 'mktUniversalPersist'
3. edit the cookie and scroll all the way to the end where it says 'SEG' then a charater. change that last character to a 'D' and save.
4. refresh and your banner should say 40% off and give you the BRSUMMER40 coupon, add this coupon code when you're checking out."

wanted to add that you may not see 40% off banner at the top (it didn't for me) but when I entered in BRSUMMER40 at checkout after doing this, it still took 40% off my order.

If you are having trouble getting 40% coupon to work while checking out, try this method....
1. Sign into your BR account
2. Load your cart up with what you want to buy
3. Close browser window
4. Clear your browser cookies
5. Go back to BR website
6. Proceed with OP's instructions to get 40%
7. Sign back into account (items you added previously should already be in your cart)
8. Go to checkout, apply code BRSUMMER40
9. Purchase!
