Computer speakers good for TV?

I have a new Toshiba 46 inch LCD tv. The sound volume is awful. I don't care about stereo quality but just want some volume! Are any of the Logitech, JBL, etc usable with this TV? I don't want to spend more than $50. Any advice appreciated!

Toshiba LCD HDTV are known to have very weak speakers. Yeah, a 2.1 pc speakers will work, but your need the right 3.5mm inputs & outputs , cables. Also, consider a real 2.0 and 2.1 system if you have the space.Amazon.com: Sony SRSD4 2.1 Desktop Speaker System: Electronics [amazon.com]

I got a pair of 12 year old Yamaha PC speakers hooked up to my Panasonic Tube HDTV. All you need is a converter that takes the audio out, right and left, and accepts a speaker plug.

I bought one a couple years ago from Walmart new for $125~ It works fantastic! I've seen it now much cheaper, so look around. It's well worth the money. Refurbished on Ebay, it goes for around $50.

Thing about PC speakers, u have to get up and go to the TV to control the volume... which sucks! save up and get something that can control with a remote.

I hear ya and know exactly what you want, but it depends on your audio outputs.
Do you have a mini pin headphone type output on your TV?
If so, then you can buy the most reputed $50 computer speakers that you can find, which will surely be an improvement over your present situation. (i'm sure you have no illusions of grandiose hi-fi audio at that price range)
If you don't have the variable volume minipin output but have a flat output in the rear, like left and right RCA audio outputs, then you could still use computer speakers, but as mentioned above, you would not be able to control the volume by remote, unless you have a cable box with a volume control.
If you don't have either of those outputs/connections, then you'll have to spend a good deal more for actual TV speakers, maybe a soundbar like MikeBear mentioned.

But as others mentioned, you may want to just invest in a soundbar or other cheap solution. But if you've got some extra speakers lying around the house, it doesn't cost a thing to give them a try.

Exactly! Your old desktop speaker will work with you TV. If you need better quality audio with sub woofer. Go with JBL. Probably you need shell a few more bucks than $50.

If you have a receiver, you can hook the TV up to the receiver.
Use the headphone port if your TV is like mine.

You may think about paying a bit more to get a sound bar or at least 2.1. I prefer having a sub woofer as you will appreciate having bass and surround sound when watching movies (I am using xbox 360 5.1)

I'm still using a set of Logitech Z-somethings that I picked up at Staples on Black Friday many years ago. Sounds quality isn't audiophile good, but it's pretty good.
