I have had 3 USB adapters from different companies (D-Link, Asus, and Encore) and all have worked just fine for me. The only time I have ever run into trouble with them is when they try to get you to use their own bundled software to manage the wireless connection. In my experience, Windows itself always does a better job of this.

For a desktop (or any device that doesn't need mobility), I prefer a wireless bridge over PCI or USB based wifi adapters. Lots of advantages, including no drivers, better antenna solution, easier to place in an ideal location (limited only by the length of an ethernet cable, i.e., 100m!), can be shared by several devices (assuming it comes w/ a switch, such as a router), supports ALL operating systems (no compatibility issues, now or in the foreseeable future), etc.
And one thing ppl often overlook -- it preserves WOL (Wake On LAN). If you want the ability to remote desktop into that computer and don't want to leave it on continuously, then WOL is your friend. But WOL only works over wired ethernet, not wireless. A PCI/USB wifi adapter kills WOL, but a wireless bridge preserves it since it’s patched to the wired ethernet port of your PC, the one that supports WOL. So many ppl overlook this until AFTER they’ve bought a PCI/USB wireless and only later realize WOL won’t work. Last edited by eibgrad; 05-26-2012 at 08:19 PM.. It depends on what you are doing really. I wouldn't waste my time or spend money on a card when I just game/browse the internet. A single airlink 10 bucks is fine for me and I get 29mbp/s download

I've used cheap rosewills and netgears with success in the past, getting the exact same speeds as built in (laptop) wifi. Only problem with USB dongles is they tend to get hot. Also, I highly suggest using a USB extension cable rather than plugging it into the port directly. The flexibility helps to protect the ports. One of my dongles broke when my kitten used it to scratch her face. The torque that placed on the port caused the whole thing to come loose

I'm using a Linksys PCI adapter ... works fine. I think I paid $30 for it at Wally World. There is a far greater difference between Wifi routers in terms of performance than there is between adapters in my experience.
I have degrees in both animal behaviorism and psychology and have come to the conclusion that animals make a hell of a lot more sense than people.

I got this [newegg.com] for a desktop in my office. It works well enough.
I use a Linksys WRT54G Wireless router with DD-WRT installed as a wireless bridge in my basement. |
