I bought the Sylvania LC195SLX during a Target Sale @ ~$135 ~2-3 years ago to 'Experiment' with HDMI (my other TVs were CRTs). My TV has a NTSC/ATSC/QAM tuner. It worked fine with Comcast and continues to work fine with FiOS. The only problem, with most QAM 'Auto-Scan' devices, is that they detect way too many 'Fake' channels that you have to manually delete, one-by-one. . The HDTV picture (720/1080) is fine - the SD (480) not so much. My newer Panasonic TC-L32C3, also 720p, is much better with SD (i.e. better internal scaler). My wife watches DVDs I burn for her (480p) of movies from about 6' away and she's fine with it. I added one of those Altec Lansing 2.1 PC speaker systems that were on sale 'all-the-time' several years ago plugged into the earphone jack - I believe I have 5, along with 2 Creative Labs; most ~$10-20 IIRC; 2 Altec Lansing 5.1 systems were ~$40 each (from ~$400 10 years ago) and they sound great. . There is a USB port on the side but it's for 'Service', not JPGs or MPEGs. . Mine has a S-Video port on the top of the side view - it appears they removed it. All-in-all, I consider it a fine 'El Cheapo' HDTV - from $135 to $89. I'd buy it again if I needed it for the shop or computer den. Not many TVs list QAM tuners, but, AFAICT, they all have them. Maybe it's some kind of deal they made with the cable companies who want to FORCE everyone to rent a STB for *EVERY* ATSC/NTSC/QAM device they own. "No more hurting people Peace" MARTIN RICHARD |

Most cable companies limit the unscrambled "Clear QAM" channels to your local and a few others. Even though I'm in the city I don't get a good signal for ATSC, so the QAM tuner is important for me. I only get basic cable, so the QAM tuner gets in everything I pay for. In most cases if you have more than a basic cable package the QAM tuner won't be as relevant, if you still want to use the TV and get your whole package. Meaning it will still require a cable box. |

In summary, this TV is GOOD for use with an antenna for over the air digital channels. (So ok for CBS, ABC, NBC, Fox, etc.)
It is NOT GOOD for digital cable hook-up. (So, NOT for Comcast, Time Warner, Charter, Cox, etc. NOT for ESPN, CNN, Discovery, DIsney ..., etc.) ~~ chevron7 ~~ ... in dark suit, going places, hunting for deals ...
note: chevron7 is a term in Stargate-SG1 TV series. It's not related to gas company ![]() |
