Im fixing the wiki. ATSC is the tuner used for over the air digital television and was federally mandated in all new TVs. There would have to be a notice on this somewhere if it wasn't able to tune ATSC.
QAM is similar to ATSC but is used by cable companies. A QAM tuner will allow you to pick up SD and HD channels your cable company is sending unencrypted. This is usually only local TV channels and their subchannels. Even if you don't have a cable box you'll still be able to get these QAM channels. IIRC QAM tuners are not required and just because you have a ATSC tuner does not mean it can do QAM. Think back to when cable TV first came out and you had UHF sets that could do over the air but weren't cable ready, its sort of the same idea. |
