this will beat the 2600k for video and photo programs. By a medium/small but noticable margin, I should add. You would be more than fine w/ either processor though. If he will be working in after effects, the processor does not matter as much as RAM. I'd say go for 16gb of ram minimum.

If he is working on premier pro CS5 or newer, he might want to throw in a graphics card that has CUDA, and 1GB+ of memory.

This processor on its own for $200 is an absolute steal as even the 2600k for $200 would be a slick deal. The problem is the LGA2011 motherboards kill the deal.

Great price for the processor, but keep in mind that building a rig around this platform is going to be more expensive than going with LGA1155.

The LGA 2011 boards aren't so bad now. Some of them have gone into a lower price point bc of the new chips releasing. And remember, having an LGA 2011 board means you can upgrade your cpu to Ivy Bridge E a couple of years from now or when they release later this year or early next year. Ivy Es should be faster than regular Ivy Bridge chips.

$200 for a motherboard is too much for my taste. I have never been in the market for an enthusiast-level CPU, so $400 for a CPU/motherboard combo is completely out of my league, but I suppose for someone who was specifically looking at this class of processors would find that a slick deal.

These are for true enthusiasts, I saw a review on newegg of someone who bought the i7-3820 to replace an i7-2600k, which is still quite new and nearly as fast. It's for people who really want to have top of the line equipment and have a crazy set up that they like to show off to others, I suppose. Or just for those who do heavy productivity and need this for work.

Simply put, the point of going 2011 is to get the 6 core and pair it with a ton of ram (many high end 2011 motherboards have 8 memory slots). But the point is that 2011 can handle more memory bandwidth, which is only needed if you have 6 cores anyways that need to be fed.

Otherwise, if your buying a quad core, 1155 is more than enough. I see no point in buying 2011 quad core. That money (saved from buying a 2011 motherboard) can be spent on a better video card, larger SSD, more ram, etc.
