192.168.1.x home network and public wifi
I have a laptop with Zone Alarm firewall. I have 192.168.1.0 subnet as trusted. My concern is if a public wifi also has that subnet. How to handle this situation?Everytime I connect to public wifi, just have to ipconfig /all and see what ip address the public wifi network is giving out? And if it that subnet, change that subnet in Zone Alarm to internet zone? What do you all do? May 15, 2013 - Price plan for Walmart's Internet On The Go [internet-go.com] changes.

Anytime you connect to a new wifi network, Windows should prompt you as to whether this is a public or home network. Choose public and Windows will keep you protected via the firewall, at least to some extent.
The better thing to do if you want FULL protection is connect to a VPN. I have my own VPN on my home router running TomatoUSB (third party firmware). Same thing could be done w/ dd-wrt. Or you could have a machine running at home w/ a VPN server. That way, everything you do is tunneled over your VPN and then it doesn't matter anymore. You're always on your own home network and everything is encrypted. Some people also use SSH proxies instead of VPN. Of course, you could use a public VPN service too, but those will usually run you a fee on a per-month or per-use basis. Running your own saves you a few bucks but at the cost of having to set it up and maintain it. Also, you inherently trust any third-party VPN service provider when you use their service, which may or may not be a good thing. Change your home network to something obscure? Maybe 192.168.100.0?
Personally I don't care enough I have used zone alarm in years. Also I don't see while the levels would be any different from a home network as a public network as the same crap can happen to you on both networks. |

I'd go with 172.16.x.x or something. They seem to be used a lot less than the 192.168.x.x and 10.x.x.x A heartless hand on my shoulder, a push and it's over
