My previous subscription did not automatically renew. They start mailing you reminder notices well before the 1-year expiration date and the renewal rate is about triple the $1 rate. I called the subscription phone number and was able to renew for three months at the $1 rate and was told it would automatically renew after that but it never did. Then in a few weeks the cycle started again with the mailed renewal notices.

I always felt like I was cheating them by only paying a dollar an issue -- particularly when the magazine had almost no advertising.
