Repost/Thread Merge votes carrying over

I've posted a few deal threads recently that were subsequently reposted. As soon as someone thumbs down a thread for report, I presume it alerts a moderator, who then merges the posts. But it also merges the voting, and it seems odd that a deal with no feedback will then instantly become a negative rated thread through no fault of the OP.

Is it possible to install some code that when threads are merged deletes any votes from the repost that are for "repost", as under the current system, the original deal is negatively affected just because it's been reposted.
