How do you keep track of your receipts/finances?

I don't mess w/ finances but for receipts on the mac I just scan them with the Scansnap s300m into devonthink which is on an encrypted virtual disk, ORCed so I don't even have to file. If i'm just looking for something like a receipt i'll type in the store name or the product and it'll find me. If i have a receipt that I'll need for taxes or something i'll just bundle a copy along with my other tax files. Great stuff.

1. I've used neat receipts in the past and never again. It's unbearably slow. Unless you got all day to waste, forget it.

All of that work plus 4 quarters will get you a dollar. Its great if that was his hobby and it kept him busy, but it serves no useful purpose.

The only receipts I keep are gas receipts (which i end up just throwing into my armrest...and every once in a while clearing them out) because I've heard too many stories of gas stations ripping people off, etc.

And big things, like my car.

I don't track receipts but use mint.com for tracking purchases.

I only keep receipts which have items that I might return anything else is tossed. I check my CC online each day and verify if purchases are posted correctly.

There is a giant paper bag i keep in my office with receipts. I can dig in there if I want. If the bag gets full and I didnt dig anything out, I put the whole bag into the recycle bin.

Fight fraud, I let my CC company handle that.
Returns: Shop at places that keep track of your purchases (Target, Home Depot, Costco)
Taxes: Keep them in a shoe box if needed. Pull them out if you get audited.

I keep all my receipts slightly organized by date of purchase in a folder in a file cabinet. Each year has its own folder. I dont utilize them enough to invest more time or money into tracking and managing them, however old receipts have come in MAJOR handy several times over the years for returns, replacement, and warranty claims. I keep almost all receipts for those reasons.

staple them to credt card statment

Since '98, I log all my expenses in a rather complex Access database. It keeps track of how much I spend when and where, shows all my accounts/balances, and does some reporting and forecasting.

I throw out all my receipts after entering them there. Except some larger local purchases which are not accessible online and perhaps needed for warranty purposes, and those needed in case of tax audits.

This might be backwards to some, but I like tracking/budgeting/charting things. Yeah it's a lot of work to some, but really just takes a minute to enter a bunch of receipts, and to me it's time well spent since I enjoy analyzing stuff afterwards.
