How poisonous are our food

Its pretty sad when poor countries eat sugar and wheat, and we're so effin rich that we eat HFCS and refined flour, wtf?!!?!?!

I've pretty much cut out the junk food and most processed foods, and nowadays only drink Mexican Coke or Throwback Pepsi made with real sugar, might have some more calories but at least it tastes good. I had a Diet Coke yesterday while I was onboard a ship, only thing they had to drink. God damn it tasted nasty! Like water with a little brown coloring and a chemical taste, I'll never understand how people drink something so flavorless. But then I guess it tastes better with a 2,000 calorie lunch :rofl:

Not sure if your comment is saying HFCS is worse than normal sugar, or just sugary drinks in general, but there it is in any case, should the issue come up further on. That's not to say that HFCS is good, just no worse for you than regular sugar.

I've heard two stories wrt HFCS vs. sugar, but my comment was wrt to drinks vs. other carb rich foods which need to be broken down by digestion.

And HFCS is not "sugar" because sugar is a food. HFCS is a synthetic food additive derived from corn. Sugar is a food: pick a beet, squeeze it - beet juice sugar. Pick sugar cane, break it down - cane sugar. You can't pick corn and get HFCS in the same fashion. There inlies the semantic scam.

Keep in mind also that every time you spend $1 on any industrial food stuffs, you're voting to keep the fake food ponzi sceme going. If you don't like it, think it's wrong, evil, unhealthy, whatever, don't finance it.

i had an open mind when it comes to alex jones some years ago. that's no longer the case.

from the study:
"Eating a high-fructose diet over the long term alters your brain's ability to learn and remember information. But adding omega-3 fatty acids to your meals can help minimize the damage."

so basically eat a normal diet and you're fine.

I would say moderation is the key, but that's not the point of this thread. I still don't get why such a rich and technologically advanced nation like the US would use HFCS as a major sweetener. You find these stuffs in baby food also. Imagine the impact it would cause on a newborn brain when it's trying to grow. Why would the FDA allow food companies to use it in the first place when it's so harmful?

i take it from your posts that YOU are indeed, a foreign born graduate student in the us, correct? where do you go to school? the east coast? west? certainly not anywhere in the middle. the us uses hfcs as a sweetner because, like i was getting it at, basically every inch of land between the atlantic and pacific is good for growing corn (obviously not every inch, bare with the hyperbole). not many places in the us are good for growing sugar. it's cheaper and more efficient to make do with what we have than to import it.

The sugar lobby has been very successful at getting trade barriers established to keep sugar prices higher than the rest of the world, also there are subsides for corn.

I don't think the evidence of harm was available when HFCS was approved.

Not really. My understanding is that as far as insulin resistance goes HFCS and sugar are the same. Sugar laden drinks are worse than carb rich foods in my understanding as well.. but if you are already insulin resistant then carb rich foods are a big problem, and either way I think they contribute to weight gain.

I would recommend Robert Lustig's speech "Sugar the bitter truth" on Youtube. Mohater started a thread on it in the lounge a couple of months back.
