which part of the world does not have its share of crime ? will you stop traveling and stay in a cocoon ? you just got to know where to go, how to behave, blend in well, adapt to local customs and behavior, respect local culture and be part of a travel group. That's it. Act like morons, try to stand out by screaming/yelling/shouting, ensure that you are clueless tourists and nothing more, and you are asking for it. The world is not as bad as projected by the media which ONLY preys on people by reporting the bad. You don't get a dose of the Amazonian rainforests by watching a slick National Geographic clip - you experience it by being there. Stop being paranoid
The government declared a state of emergency in the Cuzco region following a week of anti-mining demonstrations that left two people dead and more than 70 injured. Incited by a massive expansion planned at a Swiss-owned copper mine in Tintaya, protesters blocked roads and clashed with police, demanding a halt to mining operations and compensation for pollution to water and land. Under emergency rules, which will remain in place for 30 days, freedom of assembly has been abolished and the military is authorized to use force when deemed necessary. Travel and public transit may be restricted throughout the mountainous region, home to the primary Inca sites of Cuzco, Machu Picchu and the Sacred Valley of the Incas.
Looks like the flights are on TACA airlines and will all have a layover in El Salvador. Just presenting the facts as I can't comment on the airline or the stop.
I fly TACA all the time (To El Salvador) They are as good as any other airline. On the way back if they stop through El Salvador, be prepared to get off smelling like fried chicken, everyone brings "Pollo Campero" from El Salvador to distant relatives in the US....don't say I didn't warn you...better off, buy some, it's delicious!
About El Salvador, I'm biased (born there) so I will not comment....but I can tell you I go there every year...but I'm not blond and blue eyes, so I'm blend right in....but I do see many "gringos" touring around...last year we even had Obama visit LOL
I don't think united states warns poeple to avoid rural areas, taxis, drinking water, or travel in groups to reduce risk of kidnapping.
Doesn't mean they shouldn't.
Just had 5 bodies found in a burned car in the desert near Phoenix, the kidnapping capital of the United States. Tap water in the area has been known to cause unfortunate side effects and at times even kill children.
If you did not understand the message, try, try again.
i went to lima, cuzco, machu picchu in november. walked around all times of the day and night, took taxis everywhere, no problems at all, no horror stories, everywhere seemed safe and most places had a strong police presence. tons of happy tourists. never once did i feel uncomfortable.
i think some of these posts are pretty ridiculous. i guess it sucks to fear everything.
Peru is a beautiful place to visit and this is an amazing deal. Coming from experience, eating fresh ceviche and surfing all day long is a wonderful way to enjoy Lima. Just stay away from the shady looking casinos and you'll be fine.
