NYC City Tour

Eff the tours -- figure out where you want to go and take the subway, it's not that hard. Tell your visitor the subway IS one of the attractions.

If you already have a decent list of must sees, I'd map it out and plan your weekend accordingly. If you don't know what you want to do, since you only have a weekend and I assume you don't plan on going back to NYC too soon, I'd suggest taking one of the city wide bus tours (easy enough to find with Google) as soon as you get there, ride it around for a while and then prepare your list from what you see and hear and focus the rest of the trip on visiting those attractions.

Either way, planning will be essential. For example, you probably won't want to go to the Statue of Liberty or World Trade Center site on the same day you go to Central Park or one of the mid to uptown museums.

subway is easy enough to figure out. Especially with a smart phone. All you will be doing is eating, walking, looking, and more eating. Walking helps alot.

I live abuot 15 minutes from Manhattan. I go into the city a couple times a month and I actually did one of these bus tours because I felt that even though I go to the city all the time, I've never really seen much of anything. It was a great idea. I enjoyed it. Do the bus tour and then go to the different areas in Manhattan and expierience it on your own time. You'll have a great time.

I was in Manhattan for a couple of days and used the tour bus. I was able to hopped on it and when I saw something I like I got off. They have designated stops so you can easily hop off and hop back on to continue. There are a lot of tour buses like this in NY.

As for your case, you only have a weekend so I suggest creating list of what you want to see and google map everything. Google Map will tell you which subway to take.

If you have a smart phone, just download the HopStop app and problem solved.

I do not recommend bus tours, mostly because I don't like playing tourist. I live in a big city, so I want to experience a new city from a different point of view. And quite frankly, unless you're disabled or really old, there's no reason you cannot do a walking tour. I highly recommend this tour:

I think I've mentioned it here before. I've been to NYC almost two dozen times, so I was none too thrilled when my boyfriend suggested NYC for a long weekend. I thought I'd seen it all...until I went on that tour. Honestly, I'm a bit jaded about NYC and big city travel in general but the tour was nothing short of amazing. Luke, the owner, was our tour guide. He's interesting, funny and just a super cool guy. You will walk and walk and walk on this tour, probably ten miles but it's so worth it. IMO, it's the perfect way for someone to see nearly all of Manhattan in 8-10 hours. Loved it. Lastly, it should be noted that this tour is currently ranked the #2 tour in NYC right now.
