Are you sure that's what happened? I didn't try recently, but I was able to get over limits before, for things like yogurts. Or that's a new feature. I doubt why does costco bother with that.

I used to buy the kirkland brand batteries and never had any issues, but it seems over the past year or so they seem to corrode much faster than usual. Not sure why, but multiple remotes, xbox guitars and other things have had leaking kirkland batteries. This wasn't just from 1 package, has been multiple. I think i'm going to stick to the duracells for the time being.

So is the consensus that you don't need to take the coupons with you? If you tell them which items have a coupon they do it for you, right?

Interesting how the OP put numbers next to the items he wants prior to scanning the coupons. We know he/she likes electronics, changes their own oil, and plans on having BBQs in the summer. We also know he/she or a family members wears contacts and has joint problems!!

Well, it seems to differ based on location possibly. Like I mentioned earlier, in the past, they asked for the coupons, then they had changed it to where some items needed a coupon, and some didn't. But for the last year at least, I have NEVER handed them a coupon and they do not scan anything themselves. The computer AUTOMATICALLY applies the coupon to the corresponding item. I can't say why it's different in Northern CA than other places, but that's the way they do it here. In case they change their ways again, I almost always have the coupon book in my pocket anyway. It won't kill you to have them just in case.

Depends on your local Costco. The one in my area I had to show the coupons or not getting discount. They used to scan for customers without asking coupons, not anymore.

I think you missed the point. They only allow the set amount of discounts, period. I share an account (business account shared across family members) and have been denied the discount on some items because the discount was used by one of the others on our account.

And YES they do track EVERYTHING you buy, where you bought it, how much you paid, how much you spent last year, how much you spent last month, what you have returned, how many returns you've made, EVERYTHING. They have the ability to do it because of the membership cards and it's just smart business on their part. My brother was in the returns line behind a woman returning a book she obviously read. The CS person called a manager over, the manager informed her that she had returned several books over the past few months and they would be cancelling her membership if she returned another book. They have a great returns policy, but they're not stupid and it's still a "members only" store.

I wouldn't count on that. The 3 different ones I frequent all vary on their policy. One will give you the coupon without asking, one will NOT give you the discount unless you show them you have the coupons. It honestly changes month to month. You can USUALLY go to the CS/Returns desk and ask for a book (lately they have a stack on the desk so you can take one without asking), but it really depends on the individual Costco.
