Fisher-Price iXL 6-in-1 Learning System (Blue) $30 + Free Shipping at Amazon

Jump on this? Cannot decide. I have a super smart 4 year old that has a Vtech reader - she navigates smart phones like she is an adult. Should I go with this or get something different? For the money it seems like it is a descent deal.

Ill use the BATMAN game as an example.



Batman_v2.0.0.6.pkg.zip
-MACOSX This contained installer info for macintosh computers
-Batman.pkg This contained the game info for the iXL device



then inside the Batman.pkg folder;

-Contents
-Icon
Inside the contents folder there were more installer information files, as well as other garbage, but all
I was oncerned about was the Archive.pax.gz which was the the largest file in the whole archive, it takes
up like 99% of the archive size. It was obvious that this is the game data. Once extracted out of the .zip, and extract the Archive.pax.gz using winRAR, we find;

Archive.pax

A quick search of .pax files on google shows me winTAR will extract it. Once extracted, this file produces
the directories;

-.
-library
-Application Support
-Fisher-Price
-iXL
-Titles
-Batman

The batman folder containing all the game data that any cd would. I verified this with my store bought scooby-doo disc

Once you have extracted the PAX file, you can modify the registry to fool the iXL software into loading each game you download.


put each extracted game into C:\Program Files\Fisher-Price\iXL\Titles\GAMENAME

or

C:\Program Files (x86)\Fisher-Price\iXL\Titles\GAMENAME
if you are windows 7


you have to add a line in the registry


[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Fisher-Price\iXL\Titles\GAMENAME]

Thanks for the info.... but I get the .pax file singled out/extracted and I got WinTar, but what then? I try to open the pax file with WinTar and nothing happens....just a flash of a black command box....but no other files extracted.

How do I extract the files within the pax file with WinTAR?

@ $34 LeapFrog Leapster Explorer for 39.99 [ebay.com] is a better option.

I am not sure that the LeapFrog Leapster is a better deal considering this comes with 15 free games. I don't think the same applies to the LeapFrog. I might be wrong though. So for parents who want to just make a one time purchase (not buying additional games), the iXL is still a better option.

You can download all of the games for free (legally) for the Mac. You can extract the game files only and install them on your iXL from a WIndows-based PC. I installed a larger SD card and was able to install all 15 games. You will have to search the 'net for instructions. My 4.5 year old loves this device! Two issues though: If the unit gets dropped, the SD card comes out, so you have to jam a piece of cardboard net to the card to keep it tight and with constant use, the batteries last about one full day.

But when you go to install them it asks for a serial number from the game......?

This was on the 1day sale site for about 23 including shipping about a month ago. So I think at times you can find it cheaper. I bought the 1day sale one, my 2.5 year old loves it.
