I have no problem with decreasing the income gap but it should be done by raising people up, not bringing the rich down; that is counter productive. FWIW, my wife and I both have our own businesses and we seem to be on our way to living the "American Dream" so perhaps I am biased in my view of America. The author of this article seems to have a different perspective.
All growth depends upon activity. There is no development physically or intellectually without effort, and effort means work. — Calvin Coolidge

Yes I know my enemies, they're the teachers who taught me to fight me. Compromise, conformity, assimilation, submission, ignorance, hypocrisy, brutality, the elite. All of which are American dreams... Know your enemy. |

IMO, America's having become a meritocracy is precisely the reason for the fact that:
"For example, just 8% of students at America's elite universities come from households in the bottom 50% of income, Stiglitz says, even as those universities are "needs blind" — meaning admission isn't predicated on your ability to pay." In the past, before there was true social mobility, there were many high IQ people in the lower classes. Now that we've become a meritocracy, the people with poor parents likely have the same lower IQs that their parents have, which is the main reason for their parents' being poor. Studies have shown that adopted children reach the IQ potential of their biological parents, not their adopted parents. |

Well, for years I've heard stories about America falling apart and in decline. I recall when younger that Japan was going to surpass America, leaving us in the dust. Europe used to make statements about how much better their economy would from ours. Today we hear a great deal about the rise of China and the threat that poses to the US.
Thought John Stossel had a nice special this weekend about America and the idea of decline. Many people makes claims over the years of America falling apart. Rarely do any of the claims come true. Its true, we face problems in our future, but if I was to guess I'd say our country has good years ahead of us. "Is America in Decline? (airs Saturday at 3PM and 10PM on FNC)"
